About The Working Dog Photographer
The Why.
My name is Holly Cook and I am a professional dog photographer in Seattle. My specialty is dogs who work. I like to call them "dogs who work" because the image people conjure up in their head when someone says "working dog" is a law enforcement K9 or a Military Working Dog, but there IS SO MUCH MORE! (No shade to LE K9s or MWDS!)
I have worked with dogs my entire professional, adult life (and even as a kid), but until I moved to Seattle, I did not have the opportunity to get involved with dogs who work. What an amazing world it is! From therapy dogs, to fire safety dogs, to herding dogs, to Search & Rescue K9s, and everything in between, the world of working dogs is vast and amazing. (You can listen to my origin story here.)
In 2019/2020 I created a book about dogs who work called "Send Me; Working Dogs of the Pacific Northwest"
During the 16 months that it took me to create the book, I met over 70 teams who work in the Pacific Northwest and learned so many things. I started to build a small community of those teams who were featured in the book and it became a tight little network. They started to support each other, share stories and become each other's fans. It was amazing to witness. I realized that there really isn't a "place" for these teams, so I decide to create one. And you're here!
Currently, I am creating my third book for working dogs of the Pacific Northwest, called "Tails of the Pacific Northwest" and next year, I will be creating my fourth book for working dogs called "Working Tails of the Pacific Northwest".
Why working dogs? Oh, geez. This could take all day, but to sum it up in a tidy little package, I am fascinated by the working dog's drive and work ethic. Just as I answer a burning question, I end up with more questions. I have an insatiable curiosity about these teams. While it began with an obsession about working dogs, the more I worked with the teams, the more I wanted to know about the human partner as well. I have so many things to share with you! And the more I learn, the more I will share.
While I don't have a working dog of my own, I do have the experience and intense curiosity to seek out teams with fascinating stories and share them with you. Being obsessed with working dogs while not being owned by one gives me a unique perspective. Previously in my life, I was a K9 Obedience Trainer as well as an award winning pet sitter & dog walker. My life has always been about dogs. Always. From fundraisers for victims of disasters, to providing a place in a local parade for my clients to participate, I'm always looking for a way to be engaged and involved with dogs.
And, to be honest, I am a border collie in human form.
So, welcome to The Working Dog Photographer! I hope you like it here.
